After a serious back injury ended his football career at age 22, Alan rebuilt his life through education and acquired a PhD.

About the author

Alan Tonge has collaborated with Michael Garvey to tell his life story. Michael previously co-authored the autobiography of former Manchester United and Everton footballer John O'Kane, entitled Bursting the Bubble: Football, Autism and Me. Alan has contributed to several academic publications focusing on the challenges faced by pro footballers, including mental health, transitions, critical moments and the impact of Covid-19.
