Pitch Publishing is pleased to announce any exciting list of new sports titles for 2011...

Pitch Publishing is pleased to announce its list of new titles for next year. Football is once again at the forefront, with two football nostalgia titles sure to prove popular:

Got, Not Got: The Lost World of Football by Derek Hammond and Gary Silke (and published in conjunction with Mirror Football), is a stunning full-colour hardback A-Z of lost football culture. Beautifully written, crafted and designed, and based on the popular talking point that football was better in the past, Got Not Got evokes the memories of football’s past, its rituals, relics and all those things football fans miss in the modern game.

Underdog! Fifty Years of Trials and Triumphs with Football’s Also-rans, Tim Quelch’s second book, calls upon a lifetime of watching struggling teams. Highlighting the key ingredients of their achievements, including inspired management, massive motivation and shrewd methods. He also captures the grinding hardships that struggling teams and their supporters frequently endure. Including interviews with a wide number of footballers and managers, this 50-year account is placed shows how the game has changed over the last half-century.

Blues & Beatles (published under Pitch imprint Know the Score Books) will certainly catch the eye of Everton fans, but also appeal to football fans in general. It is the story of football and music across the generations. The story of how a young boy inherited those fascinations from his father – and would one day pass them on to his own son. It’s the story of how he met his heroes along the way. From legendary footballers to a 20th Century icon: one of the Fab Four. Blues & Beatles is a football story and a music story.

Two extremely popular Know the Score titles The Rivals Game and An Encyclopaedia of Scottish Football - which have both quickly sold out initial print runs – will each be updated, redesigned and new editions released.

Pitch will also continue to work closely with a number of Premiership, Football League and SPL clubs, and their club football titles for 2011 including: Aberdeen Who’s Who, Brighton & Hove Albion On This Day, Charlton Athletic On This Day, Coventry City Miscellany, Derby County Miscellany, Match of My Life Fulham, Manchester City On This Day, Nottingham Forest On This Day, Spurs On This Day, and Watford FC Miscellany.

Cricket

David Tossell, is one of two cricket-writing heavyweights who have exciting titles due for release ahead of the 2011 cricket season. Tossell, whose two previous cricket titles were nominated for the Cricket Society Book of the Year (2008 and 2010), has penned a biography of former England cricket captain Tony Greig.

Tony Greig: A Reappraisal of English Cricket’s Most Controversial Captain is more than just a biography of the first South African to skipper England, a fierce competitor who never backed down from a challenge; whether it was dealing with epilepsy, facing up to Dennis Lillee or confronting the authorities. Featuring many new interviews, including with Greig himself, and offers a compelling portrait of a fascinating cricketing era.

Aussie writer Jarrod Kimber, author of When Freddie Became Jesus, is down under this winter, writing another witty and irreverent account of the Ashes, title yet to be confirmed, detailing the ins and outs of the current 2010/11 series. Up-and-coming author Kimber, described by The Guardian as a ’21st century cricket writer’, was nominated in the Best New Author category at the British Sports Book Awards in 2010.

While, following the huge success with a number of extremely popular official football titles, in 2011 Pitch will publish their first three cricket titles, working with Glamorgan, Middlesex and Sussex County Cricket Clubs to produce On This Day books with each first-class counties.

Other sports titles

Sporting Chancer: One Man’s Journey to Take on the World is Ed Hawkins’ humorous account of his attempts to gamble his way around the globe, betting on various sporting events. A hilarious tale, find out if he succeeds, as he plays darts and tennis against Phil Taylor and John McEnroe respectively, and ends up at an illegal cockfight with Britney Spears’ babysitter, among other jaunts.

Finally, the new year kicks off with Andy Holgate’s eagerly awaited Can’t Swim, Can’t Ride, Can’t Run publishes on 1st January, and provides inspiration for all those new year resolutions. It is the story of Andy Holgate’s epic and life changing journey to become an Ironman – how a normal bloke learnt how to fall off a bike and not injure himself, to run a marathon despite two dodgy knees, and most importantly how not to drown!

Our 2011 catalogue will publish early in the year, to request a copy on release – or for further details on any of the titles listed above – please email info@pitchpublishing.co.uk.

KNOW THE SCORE cricket title Following On (A Year With English Cricket’s Golden Boys) has been nominated for The Cricket Society and MCC Book of the Year for 2011.

David Tossell’s critically acclaimed title tells the stories of the fourteen 1998 Under-19 World Cup winners against the backdrop of a historic year (2009) for their sport.

There are Ashes heroics, clashes with county committees, fall-outs with selectors and even a campaign of death threats. The result is a fascinating insight into the cricketing profession, through those who were once the English game’s golden generation.

Vic Marks, former England and Somerset cricketer and current Observer/Guardian cricket writer and Test Match Special commentator, chairs the panel of judges which will consider Following On, alongside other books nominated by Cricket Society and MCC members.

The book has already received the following high praise from the cricket media:

A great book! 5/5 - Spin Magazine

Terrific research that I hope is going to start an important debate - Matthew Engel (Financial Times), on Radio 4

A gem of a book – Michael Atherton, The Times

Poignant and true. This is an excellent book about people and their paths. It’s well written and it cares about its subjects - All Out Cricket

INDEPENDENT SPORTS PUBLISHER Pitch Publishing Limited has acquired the business and assets of Know the Score Books from administrators Senate Recovery.

Jane Camillin of Pitch Publishing said, “Know the Score Books has built up an extensive list of titles and unearthed some excellent and exciting new talent – and it is those reasons that ultimately attracted us to the business.

“Furthermore, the strategic fit and synergy between the two businesses is obvious. We already have a very good working relationship with the majority of Know the Score’s existing or target customers.”

Pitch Publishing supply a number of high-street chains, including Waterstones, WHSmith, Tesco, Asda, HMV; Gardners and Bertrams; and online sites such as Amazon; the company, founded in 2002, is currently in the process of establishing a network of export reps working in a number of territories across the world.

Ms Camillin added, “Our immediate plan is to make contact with the authors and update them on the current situation and our plans for the future. Until now we have been bound by a confidentiality agreement. It would not be right to go into in-depth detail now, but we do intend to streamline the list.

“As part of this process each title will be evaluated, and considered for reprint or an updated edition. We will explore all opportunities, including the expanding digital market, but those titles we do not intend to reprint or hold in stock, will be remaindered, in accordance with the authors’ contracts, and rights will revert back to those authors.”

Know the Score had commissioned a small number of titles, which are currently still awaiting publication. Decisions will be made within the next few days regarding these titles – and authors will be informed at the earliest possible opportunity.

Ms Camillin continued, “There are a number of unpublished works, some which have been delayed due to the period spent in administration – but since our offer to acquire Know the Score Books was accepted, we have been working with a number of authors which will help ensure their work is published with minimum delay. On behalf of those authors, we thank the administrators for supporting us in this work.”

Peter Odell, on behalf of Ian Pankhurst and Jeremy Bowden, Joint Administrators of Know the Score Books Limited, said, “Saving the business was crucial given the titles currently awaiting publication. We are pleased that we have been able to assist the authors and Pitch Publishing in concluding a deal which will ultimately benefit everyone involved.”
